Microsoft to offer Windows 7 on USB thumb drives?

windows 7 usb flashby Barry Collins, pcpro
Microsoft is reportedly considering offering Windows 7 on USB thumb drives to allow netbook owners to upgrade their machines.
Windows has, until now, only been distributed on DVDs or via download. However, netbooks don't come with optical drives and downloading an operating system is a frankly painful experience.
The Windows 7 ISO weighs in at 2.3GB, which would take several hours to download on an average broadband connection and potentially do serious damage to a customer's broadband data cap.
Consequently, the company is exploring alternative means of distributing the OS, including USB flash drives, according to a report.
Microsoft UK was unavailable to comment on the speculation at the time of publication.
Windows 7 could prove an attractive option for netbook owners whose machines are plodding along with Windows Vista. PC Pro's tests have shown that Windows 7 runs perfectly well on machines with only a single core processor and 1GB of RAM, whereas we have found Vista frustratingly slow on the same spec.

Windows 7 pre-orders grab Amazons top sales spots

Microsoft and e-retailers discount Windows 7 as much as 58%, buyers flock.
Microsoft and online retailers today kicked off Windows 7 sales in the U.S., Canada and Japan, taking pre-orders at prices discounted by as much as 58%.
The upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium, priced at $49.99, immediately stormed to the top of Amazon.com's bestseller list. The $99.99 Windows 7 Professional Upgrade held the No. 2 spot in software, while Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade, a $219.99 package that has not been discounted, claimed No. 4 as of 1:30 p.m. ET Friday.
Microsoft officially announced the limited-time deal yesterday, although details had leaked earlier this month when the Engadget site published a Best Buy memo that spelled out the prices and start date.
The discounted prices are good from today through July 11 in the U.S. and Canada, or "until supplies last," Microsoft noted in fine print. Pre-order prices will cease after July 5 in Japan. Customers in the U.K., France and Germany will be offered similar pre-order discounts starting July 15.

LCD-Plasma Display Technology Shoot-Out

plasma tvextremetech
If you were shopping for a large-screen HDTV just a few years ago you would have seen mostly Rear Projection HDTVs, based primarily on DLP, LCD and LCoS technologies, plus a fair number of pricey direct-view Plasmas, and maybe a few very expensive direct-view LCDs. It's amazing how the TV industry has abruptly toggled into an entirely different lineup. Now you'll see mostly direct-view LCDs together with a small number of Plasmas. If you look in some back corner you may find a few attractively priced Rear Projection DLP HDTVs. CRT and LCoS technologies are now dead for HDTVs, and Rear Projection is "a dead man walking."
Scientifically, it's hard to understand why this happened because CRT, LCoS and DLP offered the highest picture quality at the lowest price, while direct-view large-screen LCDs have historically offered the lowest picture quality at the highest price. This seems to be the result of a series of consumer misconceptions together with some high powered industry marketing. Of course, all of the display technologies have improved dramatically over the last few years, so we decided to revisit this topic and do a new in-depth Shoot-Out comparison and analysis of LCD and Plasma technologies to find out how they are currently performing.
